Rosa Montero’s reading about Noke

What a surprise to meet during the opening of “Immersive wor(l)ds” Bruna Husky , main character of “Tears in the rain”, the novel that has inspired Noke Yuitza’s work. Was really her, the combact replicant, with a tatoo that divides her face and then go on in all her body, dividing her (or maybe linking her, as in the book we can read). behind that avatar there was really Rosa Montero, the author of the book, who entered in sl because of that opening. Rosa partecipated to Noke’s work, sending her some mp3s with her personal readings of book’s fragments.

It was my pleasure knowing her and talking with her about her book and Noke’s installation: She is a very friendly person and I profits by her disponibility for making her an interview rich of curiosity and irony.

Did you know something about Secondlife’s art before this experience with Noke?

Yes. Actually I knew it a lot. I entered SL six or seven years ago and I stayed there very active for six months or so…. My avatar was called Bruna Husky since the beginning. It has been a name that I have used for other things, for example, my twitter is @BrunaHusky. And when I created my replicant in the novel, I thought of calling her with my Secondlife name. Now I don’t enter SL anymore, well, only from time to time to assist some events, like the other day, or last year, when I had a launching of my novel “Tears in rain” in SL. I have enjoyed a lot SL, but now I think my experience there is finished. Actually I have a novel, called in Italy “Notturno di sole” (in Spain is “Intrucciones para salvar el mundo”) that talks a lot about Secondlife and has some scenes there.

What was your first impression about Noke’s work on “Tears in the rain”?

Ah, I have loved it!!!! I think she is a very creative and brilliant and original…. I loved the whole installation, but the best for me is the third floor with the head of Bruna the replicant floating in a sea of tears… So powerful, so beautiful, so visionary!!!!! Really great.

I red your book and I was capured by the atmosphere and the universe you created around your characters. I think it’s a story in which you suggest character’s feelings, personalities, etc. but you leave to readers the possibility to go beyond your words and imagine more and more about them. Noke did it in her installation, she gave a deep look on every character and every detail she has choosen to underscore. Do you agree with her personal reading? Is there something beyond your vision about your own universe?

The most interesting thing of all this is to see what a doted artist as Noke has imaginated after your novel. I mean, I don’t want to see “digital illustrations” of my novel, but her idea, her world. This is what she has done, and, as I said, it is wonderful. It is her world, but I see it very near to my sensibility and to Bruna Husky, indeed.

I found very interesting the interaction between installation and dedicated avatars. Saturday you was Bruna Husky in Noke ambientation and I was Mirari. What do you think about this possibility?

That was superb!!!! You were amazing as Mirari and I felt a real thrill being there, in the artistic heart of my novel (the installation by Noke), me with my Bruna avatar and you as Mirari… Uau!!!! It was exciting and vertiginous.

Usually a book becomes screenplay for a movie and in that situation the Director gives his personal reading about the story. Do you think that the complexity of works as Noke one can open another possibility of interaction through different arts?

I don’t want to do the screenplay of my novels nor to supervise the movie, as I say before about art, the most exciting thing is to see what a film director does from your novel. I liked that when one of my novels became a movie. However I love to explore others ways of art. I wrote a libreto for the Opera Version of one of my novels, and I have also collaborated in the comic version of “Tears in the rain”, which is already published. In this moment I am collaborating in a digital animation film that an Argentinian artist, Ryan Acosta, is beginning to prepare on “Tears in Rain”… I am preparing also a pilot experience of a readers club on the Cloud with this “Tears in rain” novel as matherial of reading and working. And I am open to everything….

We are happy to can tell you that Rosa promised us to return in sl next autumn for talking with us about these themes. Noke’s  installation will be in Brera untill the end of July, you can see it at this link.
